history

In 1924 Stephan Schaffan Sr. founded the Atlas Tool Company in Newark . In 1933, his son Stephan Schaffan Jr. joined his father's company at the age of 16. As an enthusiastic aircraft model maker, he received an order from a dealer to improve model train tracks , which previously had to be assembled from sleepers and rail profiles himself. Stephan Schaffan Jr. developed machines for the automated production of tracks and rail connectors for pre-assembled turnouts and flexible tracks. These products opened the model railroad market to a broader public.

In 1947 the previous garage sales company set up a factory in Hillside, New Jersey, in which the products were manufactured for the mass market. On September 30, 1949, the company was converted into a corporation and became Atlas Tool Company Inc.

In 1962, Atlas introduced a motorway system that later formed the basis for the Faller AMS vehicles.
