Attalos of Rhodes
Attalos of Rhodes ( Greek ῎Ατταλος Áttalos ) was an ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician. He lived in the 2nd century BC. Chr.
Attalos lived in Rhodes and was a contemporary of Hipparchus . He brought out an edition of the Phainomena des Aratos by Soloi , an astronomical didactic poem, and wrote a commentary on it.
Attalus 'work has not survived and is only known from quotations from Hipparchus, who reproduces parts of it in his own commentary on Aratos' work. Attalos tried to defend Aratos by attempting to reconcile Aratos' descriptions with reality and to resolve contradictions. For this he also used philological means. Hipparchus, however, viewed Aratos critically.
