Assassination attempt by Gioia Tauro

The assassination attempt on the Italian long-distance train Palermo - Turin ( Treno del Sole ) on July 22, 1970 is known as the bloodbath of Gioia Tauro (Italian: Strage di Gioia Tauro ) . In an explosion and the subsequent derailment of the train a few hundred meters from the Gioia Tauro station , six people lost their lives. 66 people were injured.

The terrorist attack is linked to the Fatti di Reggio , a popular uprising in the southern Italian city of Reggio Calabria led by members of the fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano . Members of the 'Ndrangheta as well as the Avanguardia Nazionale are held responsible for the attack .

The exact circumstances of the attack are unclear.
