Attenuation ( Latin attenuatio ; "(temporary) reduction") means damping , reduction, delay (especially temporary) and stands for:

• Natural attenuation , in geology, hydrology and soil science a description of the natural retention and degradation potential of a body of water, the groundwater or soil for pollutants
• Attenuation (gene expression) , a form of regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes
• Attenuation , weakening of the pathogenic properties of a pathogen
• Attenuation To Crosstalk Ratio , a measure of the signal- to-noise ratio in telecommunications
• Attenuation correction , part of the correlation calculation
