On a long way. What the Adamek children experienced when the war came to an end is a book for young people by Gudrun Pausewang , published in 1978 , which records the story of the two Adamek sons, Werner (10 years) and Achim (6 years), who lived in the last few months had to flee from their hometown in Silesia with their mother during the Second World War .

content

When the train overcrowded with refugees in which Werner and Achim Adamek are with their mother is bombed, the children are separated from their mother. She has been injured and taken to a hospital. When the train takes a break, the children try to get to their mother, who is said to be nearby in a hospital, but they never find them there. On the way back to the train, they are surprised by the air raid alarm and seek shelter in a bunker. When the alarm is over, Werner and Achim find that the train has continued without them. So they decide to make the way to their aunt Leni Menk in Glauchau through war-ravaged Germany on their own. Except for their coats and a little provisions they have nothing with them; at night they seek refuge in any shelter. In addition to being hungry, they also suffer from the cold. When his little brother falls ill, Werner seeks refuge on a farm that is also granted to the children. When Achim is feeling better again, the boys move on. Their soles have now worn through so that they can only move forward slowly. A Russian truck takes them to Dresden - Glauchau is now only about sixty kilometers away. Fate has it that a couple pays them tickets for a train that goes to Glauchau.

When Werner and Achim arrive at their aunt's, they run into their parents there, who feared that their children would be dead.

conclusion

The fact that at the beginning of the story the mother was taken to a nearby hospital by the bombardment of the train with broken bones and a concussion and thus separated from the children, gives the opportunity to focus the story on the two sons. They get to know the whole misery of fleeing and must also defend themselves against adults.
