The license was granted on September 13, 1861 by the City of Nuremberg to the company's founder, Mr. Martin Schmitt. The company's purpose was the operation of an art and building locksmith's shop. Elevator systems were built for the first time in 1885. After the company was given the title of “Royal Bavarian Court Supplier” in 1906, specialization in elevator systems followed as early as 1918 . In the course of this, the company name (company) was changed to "Elevator works M.Schmitt + Sohn". In 1928 the company already achieved a market share of 10% in Germany. Escalators were also manufactured for the first time . In 1984 the company premises in Kornburg were acquired and after expansion work in 1986 part of the production was outsourced there.
