Foreign health insurance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The foreign health insurance is a subset of health insurance , both as part of the private health insurance and health insurance as part of the General Social Security Law in Austria . As part of the General Social Insurance Act, travel insurance protection in the event of illness applies in many countries in the sense of a bilateral social insurance agreement between individual countries.

Coverage ratio

A foreign health insurance usually covers the costs of acute physical illnesses, operations, necessary drugs and remedies, dental treatment or the medically necessary return transport from the holiday country.

Standard policies usually cover a period of six weeks. The international health insurance must be distinguished from policies that insure stays abroad of three months or more. Foreign health insurance is often offered as an additional service for credit cards , memberships in automobile clubs or supplementary health insurance .

Statutory health insurance covers part of the costs within the European Union in the event of illness, but insured persons still have to pay a large part of the costs themselves, for example if a return home is medically necessary. In May 2013, Stiftung Warentest tested 40 offers for health insurance abroad. Around a third of the tariffs tested received the test rating very good from the consumer organization . However, the testers point out that the chronically ill in particular must be aware that the insurance only covers emergencies. In follow-up tests in 2014 and 2017, the Stiftung Warentest found that the protection of the policies had generally improved. The testers therefore advise customers with older contracts to consider changing the policy.

Long term insurance

Long-term travel health insurance occupies a special position among travel health insurances and, depending on the insurer, allows a maximum travel duration of up to five years. Many long-term travel health insurances offer, in addition to regular preventive examinations , the assumption of costs for births and insurance cover during working hours , which in turn is important for people who not only want to travel abroad but also want to work. There is a big difference in the price of insurance premiums when Canada or the United States of America are specified as travel destinations, as the North American healthcare system is considerably more expensive than in all other countries.
