Private supplementary health insurance

A private supplementary health insurance represents a special form of the health insurance organized under private law . Risks of the legally compulsory insured persons are covered, which are not or only partially covered by the comprehensive health insurance of the carriers of the legally prescribed compulsory health insurance.

Supplementary health insurance can also be taken out by those with voluntary statutory health insurance and by recipients of free medical care . In addition, some supplementary insurances are also possible for those insured in the basic tariff of private health insurance.

Background and design

As a rule, the insured have to contribute to some of the benefits of the statutory health insurance through co-payments. Supplementary health insurance under private law can be used to supplement the existing insurance cover to the extent that such additional payments are reduced or borne entirely by a health insurance company organized under private law.

Selective protection against risks

Since there are different risks, these are covered by different types of supplementary insurance. As with full or partial insurance, the policyholder can individually combine different tariffs according to personal preferences and needs in order to find the best solution for themselves. Examples include the Health Insurance , the dental insurance , the hospital cash insurance , the glasses insurance or daily sickness .

Residual cost coverage for private medical treatments

Outpatient residual cost insurance is a special form of supplementary health insurance . In combination with the choice of the cost reimbursement principle, the legally insured person / the recipient of free medical care can receive private medical treatment in the same way as a private patient .

The number of all private supplementary insurances increased in the period from 2005 to 2014 by around 40 percent to 23.93 million contracts at the end of 2014.
