excuse

An excuse is to provide an inaccurate reason for an alleged or actual blameworthy circumstance. The invalid argument put forward by the person speaking is intended to serve as an excuse .

The reprehensible facts for which the person making the statement is responsible, i.e. the real reason, should be concealed because it would be sanctioned or is perceived by them as unpleasant. The reason for using an excuse can be an actual or perceived loss of face or a feeling of shame when the real reason is discovered, consideration for the feelings of the other person or the prospect of punishment .

In the legal system, an excuse is also known as a protective claim .
