A community servant was a full-time or part-time employee of a city or community whose task was the oral dissemination of official announcements and other matters in a place. Since the community servants often carried a bell with them to draw attention to themselves, they were also called people calling out or breaking out in some areas . This function made the respective community servant a well-known personality.

In many places the delivery of official correspondence or other administrative documents was one of the duties of the community servant.

history

In the 1950s, the task of community servant in many communities in Germany was taken over by local call systems and printed matter. In 2007 the profession of community servant had largely died out.
