The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (German: Australian manufacturing workers' union ) or full name Automotive, Food, Metals, Engineering, Printing and Kindred Industries Union (AMWU) (commonly in Australia as The Metal Workers is known) an Australian union .
It is registered with the Australian Industrial Relations Commission and is a member of the umbrella organization Australian Council of Trade Unions . With more than 130,000 members, the AMWU is one of the largest trade unions in Australia .
history
The oldest union that went up in the AMWU merger of 1995 was the Australian branch of the British Amalgamated Metal Workers' Union from 1851 . The AMWU has its roots in the early 1850s of the Australian labor movement and in 1995 it gave itself its current name after a merger of numerous unions. She belongs to the left wing of the Australian trade union movement.
The AMWU sees itself as part of the successful struggle of the working class for the 8-hour day, paid maternity leave for the rights of apprentices, family-friendly conditions, pensions and other rights for more than 150 years.
She participated in the political movement Stop the War Coalition in Australia and was particularly active against the liberalist government of John Howard , which was voted out in 2007, when it restricted the rights of the Australian union through various laws.

The AMWU has several stand-alone unions, referred to as a division in Australia:
