Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure

Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI) refers to a service and a procedure to enable members of different institutions to access protected information that is distributed on different web servers. Means Authentication -and- Authorization -Infrastructure is checked whether a person is authorized to access a resource, wherein the test is not due to a central register, but at the respective home organization of the person who wishes to access the resource.

In Switzerland , the SWITCH Foundation is developing a Shibboleth -based AAI system that helps Swiss universities in particular to make their e-learning offerings accessible to students beyond their own institutions. Based on the success of SWITCHaai, other countries are following with their own AAI projects.
