The Autonomous Orthodox Metropolis of North and South America and the British Isles (English Autonomous Orthodox Metropolia of North and South America and the British Isles ) is an Orthodox Church in the USA and other countries.

Structures

The church consists of four archdioceses and three dioceses in the US, Canada , Venezuela and the UK . Its head is the Metropolitan and Archbishop of New York. It has 36 parishes and 31 priests and monks.

The Church follows the Orthodox teaching and practice of the Byzantine Rite . The Western Orthodox rite is used in some communities in the United States. It follows the old Julian calendar ( Altkalendarier ).

The Church is not recognized by the canonical Orthodox Churches .

history

At the end of the 19th century, congregations with a Ukrainian Orthodox tradition were formed in the USA. In the 20th century, the Archdioceses of New York and Texas were formed, which were related to the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church abroad .

In 1997 they joined the old calendar "Orthodox Metropolis of Aquileia and Western Europe". On February 27, 2011, they were granted the status of an autonomous metropolis of this church. On April 4, 2011, the metropolis separated again from the Synod of Milan . The reason were plans to subordinate them to the Russian Orthodox Church . On July 12, 2011, the metropolis concluded a church fellowship with the Russian True Orthodox Church under Metropolitan Raphael . In the same year she agreed a church fellowship with the Greek metropolitan synod of the patristic calendar .

In 2013, Bishop John of Edmonton of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada joined the metropolitan area and its parishes.

In 2014 the metropolis dissolved the church fellowship with the Russian and Greek churches, as they stuck to Imjaslavie , despite criticism from the metropolis.
