The Avalon Wilderness Reserve is a nature reserve on the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The reserve was established as the Avalon Wilderness Area under the Wildlife Act in 1964 . In 1986 the reserve was given its current status under the Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Act . The main purpose of establishing the reserve is to protect the Canadian forest caribou ( Rangifer tarandus caribou ), the southernmost population of which occurs in the area. The area offers canoeing and fishing waters for those seeking relaxation . There is the possibility of wild camping, bird and animal watching and landscape photography. Official permission is required for all activities in the reserve.

The protected area covers an area of 1070 km². It is located in the central southeast of the Avalon Peninsula . The highest point is the 334 m high Bread and Cheese Hill .
Flora and fauna
The Avalon caribou herd , which consists of around 2000 animals (as of 1998), lives in the Avalon Wilderness Reserve and the adjacent areas. The red grouse occurs in the reserve . Various lichens and the red pitcher plant grow in the area . In the rivers that flow through the reserve, there may be a. The following fish species are found: brook trout , trout , arctic smelt and freshwater salmon (ouananiche), the non-anadromous form of the Atlantic salmon . There are six rivers that anadromous salmon migrate up to . These are: Renews River, Biscay Bay River, Peter's River, North Arm River and Salmonier River, and Northwest Brook.
