The Avalon Wilderness Reserve is a nature reserve on the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The reserve was established as the Avalon Wilderness Area under the Wildlife Act in 1964 . In 1986 the reserve was given its current status under the Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Act . The main purpose of establishing the reserve is to protect the Canadian forest caribou ( Rangifer tarandus caribou ), the southernmost population of which occurs in the area. The area offers canoeing and fishing waters for those seeking relaxation . There is the possibility of wild camping, bird and animal watching and landscape photography. Official permission is required for all activities in the reserve.
