history

In 1867, when today's Avenida Scalabrini Ortiz was still a dirt road, it was called El Camino del Ministro Inglés (English Minister's Way) because the British diplomat Henry Southern used it to get to his country house. A decree dated November 27, 1893 renamed Avenida Canning in honor of George Canning , the former Foreign Secretary of Great Britain .

Another decree, dated May 31, 1974, from the reign of Juan Perón , determined the renaming to the current name Avenida Scalabrini Ortiz . Raúl Scalabrini Ortiz was an Argentine writer, journalist and essayist.

Two years later, under the military dictatorship, the Avenida was renamed Avenida Canning again , and on December 29, 1985 it was given its current name again.

The salon Canning , a tango hall on the Avenida in the Palermo district, is reminiscent of its temporary name .
