The Avenida de Berlim is a higher-level inner-city street in the municipality of Olivais in the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It leads from Parque das Nações in a westerly direction to Lisbon-Portela Airport , where the arms of the street also flow into Avenida das Comunidades Portuguesas , Avenida Cidade do Porto and Avenida Marechal Craveiro Lopes .
history
The road was built in the late 1930s as part of the construction of the two new Lisbon airports. It was supposed to serve as a fast car connection between today's Aeroporto da Portela and the landing site for seaplanes Aeroporto Marítimo de Cabo Ruivo on the Tagus River . The street's original name was Avenida de Ligação entre Aeroportos or Avenida Entre-Aeroportos .
After the water airport was closed in the late 1950s, the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon decided on December 28, 1964 to rename the street to Avenida de Berlim . The name change goes back to a letter from the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, who had requested that the street on which the German School was located be named after the city of Berlin .
