The German School in Lisbon is a private school that was founded on August 1, 1848 on the initiative of the German Protestant community in Lisbon . It is the oldest German school abroad on the Iberian Peninsula . After changing locations, the school was rebuilt in January 1963 on a piece of land acquired by the Federal Republic of Germany , its current location in the municipality of Lumiar , Telheiras district . The architect was Otto Bartning . The school was his last work; construction was completed by his office partner Otto Dörzbach .

The private school has been approved by the Portuguese Ministry of Education. The school is run by the German School Association in Lisbon, a non-profit, not-for-profit company .

In the years 2004–2006 the school underwent a fundamental structural modernization. The focus is on the new primary school and sports hall as well as the modernized auditorium , the design of which the internationally award-winning Portuguese architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça was commissioned to design.

The general education school , which works according to German curricula, enables the German Abitur as well as access to Portuguese universities. It is an encounter school . There is also a kindergarten (from three years of age).

The German and Portuguese languages are taught. Of the 884 students in 2016/17, around 60% were Portuguese children.

As part of an independent quality check, the school was certified as an Excellent German School Abroad by the Federal-State Inspection in February 2010.
