Tombs on the Hamelin garrison cemetery

The Hameln Garrison Cemetery is a historic cemetery on Deisterstraße in Hameln . It is the final resting place for high-ranking military personnel from all over northern Germany , including the Hameln Fortress . Most of the preserved tombs date from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The cemetery was probably laid out in 1676. The first verifiable burial took place in 1685. Originally it was only intended for officers, but other members of the military were later buried in the cemetery. Until 1708 it served as a burial place for the Huguenots resident in Hameln .

In 1865, the cemetery administration was taken over by the city of Hameln, which has also owned the area since 1950. The cemetery has been a listed building since 1987 .
