Axillary lines

The axillary lines (lat. Līneae axillares ) are imaginary lines along the upper body perpendicularly starting from certain points of the armpit .

There are three axillary lines on the right and left:

  • anterior axillary line (Linea axillaris anterior): runs vertically downwards from the highest point of the anterior axillary fold, which is formed by the pectoralis major muscle
  • Middle axillary line (Linea axillaris media): runs vertically from the highest point of the armpit or the middle of the armpit downwards
  • posterior axillary line (Linea axillaris posterior): runs vertically downwards from the highest point of the posterior axillary fold, which is formed by the musculus latissimus dorsi and the musculus teres major
