The Bürgerspitalkirche of Krems an der Donau is a Roman Catholic church and is located on Obere Landstrasse in the center of the city. It is consecrated to Saint James the Younger, the son of Alphaeus and Saint Philip .

history

After the destruction of the supply facility for old and destitute citizens, which was initially outside the city, there was a desire to move this citizen's hospital to the city. The sovereign Emperor Friedrich III. allowed the demolition of the houses of the Krems Jews , who were murdered and expelled in the course of the Viennese Gesera , in order to build the new building on them. That is why we find his motto, the famous AEIOU with the year 1470 in the lintel of the portal. An event occurred that was indicative of Friedrich III's permanent financial need. is:
When one of the houses was demolished, a tin bottle with gold and 550 guilders was found, which the citizens had obviously kept a secret. Friedrich III. but got knowledge of it and claimed this treasure. But only the tin bottle and its contents were sent to him, the 550 had already been "built in" in the hospital and the city hoped to be able to keep this money. Friedrich III. did not agree with this procedure, only allowed the use of 150 guilders and ordered the immediate return of the remaining 400.

Description of the church

The rich, tendril-shaped network of the vault , like the portal solution, shows a connection to the simultaneous construction of the Piarist Church in Krems . The buttresses placed on the inside form a special feature, a logical solution in and of itself, as they would have narrowed the country road on the outside, which was already the most important traffic axis back then. On the high altar with a version in black and gold by Johann Bernhard Grabenberger (1680–1682) there is an altar leaf hll. Philip and James from the 19th century, flanked by statues hll. Nikolaus and Wolfgang, who are attributed to Matthias Schwanthaler. A two-winged sacrament niche is built into the right front buttress. The doors are made as ironwork from crossing iron bars, the figures and ornamental tendrils are made of sheet metal and have leftovers of painting. This simple but impressive iron work comes from the construction period and can therefore be dated to around 1470/80.
