history

The former ancestral seat of the Szczuka herbu Grabie family is located in Bęćkowo. Old Polish nobility whose name can be proven from 1230. The first Szczukas settled here around 1400. The family was ennobled around 1400 by Prince Janusch of Mazovia. One of the family's former manor houses still stands on the outskirts of Bęćkowo. The original manor house burned down around 1730 and was then rebuilt in today's style. It seems to have been empty for a long time and is not in good shape. (As of July 2018 - viewed in person). The name Szczuka is closely related to Stanislaw Antoni Szczuka. He was secretary to the Polish King John III. Sobieski and under August II. Under Chancellor of Lithuania. He and all other male members of this family who were fit for military service were also present at the battle of Vienna against the Turks in 1683 . A member of the family, Colonel Wenzel Szczuka with his lieutenant, fell before Vienna. As you know, the intervention of the Poles was crucial to the victory. It is said that 2,000 Polish winged hussars alone ultimately put the Turks to flight. Stanislaw Antoni Szczuka is also the builder of the church in Szczuczyn and also founded the place himself. He owned a lot of land with a few villages in the region. Bęćkowo was one of them. He is buried in his church with two of his children and died of pneumonia in Warsaw in 1710.
