BAKORSTANAS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BAKORSTANAS (Abbreviation for Badan Koordinasi Bantuan Pemantapan Stabilitas Nasional , coordination group for maintaining national stability) is an Indonesian secret agency that stands outside the law and is supposed to ensure the national security of the country.

BAKORSTANAS was founded on September 5, 1988 by presidential decree and succeeded the KOPKAMTIB . The following day, General Commander General Try Sutrisno was appointed head of the authority, but he was directly subordinate to President Suharto . State Secretary Murdiono declared the coordination of all national efforts to restore, maintain and consolidate national stability as the authority's top priority.

It soon became clear, however, that Suharto wanted little more than to weaken the former commander-general and then defense minister, General Leonardus Benyamin Murdani (old spelling Moerdioni), who had alienated Suharto. Murdani had been removed from office early in 1988 but retained his post as director of the KOPKAMTIB. This authority was dissolved by presidential decree on September 5, 1988 and at the same time BAKORSTANAS was formed.
