from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BP Oil Refinería de Castellón SA is one of the largest oil refineries in Spain .

The approximately 200 hectare facility is located directly on the Mediterranean coast in the municipality of the city of Castellón de la Plana in the autonomous region of Valencia .

Production began in 1967 with an initial processing capacity of three million tons per year. In 1980 the plant was expanded to six million tons. The BP Castellón refinery is wholly owned by BP and has had a capacity of 110 thousand barrels per day since 2009. BP Castellón is the only refinery that supplies the regions of Castellón, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. The operator is BP España. The number of employees at the refinery is around 450 (as of 2009).

The raw material crude oil is delivered by special ships that moor on an island docking platform in the sea 4 km from the coast. The crude oil delivered is conveyed to the tank farm via a 1000 mm underwater pipeline and stored temporarily. The crude oil is then fed to the respective processing plant from the central warehouse.

Further processing results in higher quality products such as petrol, diesel fuel, heating oil and kerosene. Raw materials such as liquid gas, naphtha and middle distillate are used for the chemical industry. The finished products are also loaded into ships via four small pipelines via a smaller docking platform 2.5 km away or distributed to end customers such as airlines, airport operators and petrol stations by tanker truck or their own rail connection by rail. The BP Oil España Heliport airfield is also located on the site

The Nelson Index for comparing the complexity of various other refineries is 12.2 for BP Oil Refinería de Castellón.
