BSL-110

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BSL-110 Feldspaten (in the Russian original: Большая сапёрная лопата (БСЛ-110) ) is an item of equipment of the Russian Army , the Belarusian Armed Forces and the Ukrainian Armed Forces . The feldspade was designed for the Red Army and has been in use since the 1930s. It was created in large numbers and is used in various armed forces in the former Warsaw Pact countries.

In use it turned out that the small MPL-50 feldspade was insufficiently dimensioned for a lot of excavation work. The BSL-110 is a practical work tool. With soils of medium density the average excavation is approx. 1 m³ per hour, with sandy soils approx. 1.25 m³, with loam approx. 0.75 m³. The length of the feldspar is standardized to 110 cm, the width of the leaf is exactly 20 cm. The weight is 1.9 kilos. The dimensions of the feldspade were chosen with care, so the depth of a trench recommended by the Soviet Army Command at that time is 110 cm and thus exactly the total length of the BSL-110. The width of the spade of 20 cm should correspond to the blade length of a bayonet. The height of the sheet is 25 cm and thus approximately the total length of a bayonet. This standardization made it easier to work with the device. This made it easy to communicate approximate size information. The shape of the blade was chosen so that the BSL-110 can be used as a shovel, spade and for chopping.

The BSL-110 served as a model for the NVA pioneer sponsor. In contrast to the BSL-110, the NVA pioneer spade has a round blade.
