The Palatinate AB according to sheet 020 (to be run as B Pfalz 68 according to DRG generic conventions) were two-axle compartment cars, which were originally built as 1st and 2nd class cars. As early as 1913, the carriages were only listed as 2nd class.

history

As with most of the other regional railway companies, the compartment car was the most common type of car in the Palatinate Railways. The Königl were an exception . Wuerttemberg railways that procured wagons of the so-called "American" design from the beginning.

procurement

In the years up to 1880, the Palatinate Railways procured a total of 352 two-axle compartment cars . 10 of them according to sheet 20 of the WV of 1913 in the years between 1874 and 1878.

Constructive features

Underframe

The frame of the car still had a mixed construction of wood and iron. The outer side rails were made of iron and had a double-T shape. The remaining cross members and the buffer beams were made of wood. As a towing device, the wagons had screw couplings with safety hooks according to VDEV, the drawbar was spring-loaded throughout. The wagons were equipped with rod buffers with an installation length of 600 mm, the buffer plates had a diameter of 370 mm. In the cars with a brakeman's cab ( B Pfalz 68a ), the installation length of the buffers on the brakeman's cab side was extended to 800 mm.

drive

The wagons had riveted half-timbered axle brackets made of flat iron of the short, straight design. The axles were stored in split sliding axle bearings. The wheels had spoked wheel bodies and a wheel diameter of 1,014 mm. The suspension consisted of an 8-layer spring that was attached to the spring brackets with simple straps.

Hand brakes in the raised brakeman's cab or as a free seat brake acted on all wheels on both sides. According to the 1913 directory, the cars were equipped with Schleifer type air brakes, and one car had a Knorr type brake.

Car body

The car body framework consisted of a wooden frame work. It was clad with sheet metal on the outside and wood on the inside. The side walls were slightly indented on the underside. The wagons had a flat arched roof. Depending on the design, the braked wagons either had a raised, open brakeman's cab, which was only accessible from one side, or a brakeman's seat (free seat brake) built into the roof edge of one end face.

The interior had a total of four compartments, one in 1st class with 6 and three in 2nd class with 8 upholstered seats each. The order of the compartments was: II, I, II, II. The cars had no toilets.

Furnishing

The wagons were heated by steam . Some of the wagons were also equipped with a compressed coal heater. The lighting was done by gas. The storage container with a volume of 650 liters hung on the frame in the longitudinal direction of the car.

comment

Already in the directory from 1913 the cars were as class B listed. With the change of the car to the subordinate service, the 1st class compartment was renamed to 2nd class without changing the seat layout.
