The Bab Berdieyenne Mosque (also Bab Berdayin , Arabic مسجد باب بردعين, DMG Masǧid Bāb Barada'īn ;, French Mosquée Bab el-Berdaïne ) is one of several mosques in the Moroccan city of Meknes . The building is near the city gate Bab Berdieyenne ("Gate of the pack saddle manufacturers"; French: Bab el-Berdaïne ) in the north of the old town , which was included as a whole in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996 .

history

The young wife of the Sultan Mulai Ismail , Khnata bent Bakkar († 1754), had the mosque built at the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century , i.e. while her husband was still alive. After his death in 1727, she de facto led the affairs of government for his weak and quarreling sons for years.

architecture

The mosque, built almost entirely from rammed earth, differs only slightly in its architecture from the older multi-aisled mosques in the Maghreb. The decoration of the approximately 30 m high minaret consists of numerous fields with slightly differently designed blind arches on each side, some of which are broken through by small light openings. A cubic attachment ( lantern ) rises on the tower , the exterior decoration of which is designed in a similar way.

collapse

During the Friday prayer at noon on February 19, 2010, after days of rain, the minaret and parts of the roof of the mosque, which was packed with around 300 people, collapsed ; the accident killed 41 people and injured over 80 people. The victims were only men, as women were not allowed to pray in the mosque. King Mohammed VI announced the reconstruction based on the historical model. The collapse was due to the fact that the mosque was dilapidated and the mud walls of the minaret were soaked with water after the persistent rainfall and thus became significantly heavier and thus ultimately more unstable.

reconstruction

The reconstruction of the mosque, which was carried out with plastered bricks , was carried out on the instructions of King Mohammed VI. in 2012/13.
