Bab El Kasbah

Bab El Kasbah ( Arabic باب القصبة, DMG Bāb al-Qaṣba ) is one of the entrance gates to the medina of Sfax . It is located on the western side of the southern city wall and gives access to the square next to the Kasbah of Sfax.

The gate is originally known as Bab Jedid (New Gate) because it was the first newly built gate at the end of the 19th century - over a thousand years after the construction of the two historical gates Bab Jebli and Bab Diwan . With the breakthrough in the wall, the area should be relieved and the exchange with the colonial district of Bab El Bhar should be facilitated. Since its restoration in 1960 , the gate has had a second, smaller side entrance next to the main portal.

The gate leads to a large square in the medina, which is bordered by the Sidi Ilyes mosque at the front, the mausoleum of Sheikh Mefteh and the Abbassiyya madrasa in the east and the eponymous kasbah in the west. On the outside, the gate points to the Resistance Square , the Jardin de Dakar and the technical high school on the opposite side of the avenue Ali-Belhouane .
