Backplate (photography)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term backplate has established itself in photography as a technical term for large-format background and overview photos with high resolution and color depth .

Technology and use

This digital medium format photos taken or even more specialized cameras, mostly of landscapes, roads and cities, serve in the advertising photography , product visualization and marketing as backgrounds for exempted items. Backplates are also used in CGI projects , where they give 3D video animation a realistic background. In addition, backplates are used for large-format poster advertising on scaffolding and at trade fair appearances.

Color space , color depth and resolutions of up to 100 megapixels result in files of up to 6 GB in uncompressed images in TIFF or RAW format . During production, the lighting conditions, camera position, format and, above all, the marginal allowances are selected in such a way that the graphic designers and image editors have enough leeway for adjustments later without losing focus and flexibility.

Moving image

Backplate videos are film sequences of high technical quality that are suitable as moving backgrounds - also in terms of lighting and camera work. Typical examples of such assemblies are (mostly short) scenes of driving, including computer-animated cars.
