The Bahnhofstrasse 1 building is a listed building in the city of Sigmaringen . It is part of the city's railway station ensemble, which is also under monument protection. The building from 1873 in need of renovation has been owned by the city since the early 1990s.

Location and description

The building is located a few meters northwest of the Sigmaringen train station on the Tübingen – Sigmaringen railway line . Opposite, in a south-westerly direction, is the municipal parking garage, while Sigmaringen Castle is within sight of the building to the west. On a plot of 665 m², the building has a living space of around 300 m². The building has three floors and a basement.

use

Originally the building was a switchman's house . It experienced a variety of uses as accommodation for the homeless, as a warming room and as a residential building. In 1991 the city of Sigmaringen bought the building with the intention of tearing it down and possibly building a city museum on this site. Since the plans for this were not yet concrete, the demolition was delayed. In 2000 the building was placed on the list of buildings worthy of protection by the State Monuments Office, as it belongs to a station ensemble that is almost unique in southern Baden-Württemberg. Demolition was therefore impossible, the State Monuments Office estimated the cost of a renovation at an amount between 800,000 and 900,000 euros as reasonable for the city, and funds from the monument subsidy could be applied for. After an interested party who wanted to turn the building into a residential and commercial building with a café jumped out, the city of Sigmaringen decided in 2014 to offer the building for sale.
