Rockport Railroad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rockport Railroad is a former railway company in Maine ( United States ). It was founded on May 18, 1886 and built an approximately five kilometer long railway line from Rockport to Simonton Corners. Since the railway had no connection to other railways anyway, the three-foot (914 mm) track was chosen for reasons of cost. The line opened in 1886 and mainly transported limestone from quarries in Simonton Corners to lime kilns in Rockport. Passengers were also carried to a small extent. After the opening of a tram line through Rockport, which also tied up some new limestone quarries in Camden , the line was no longer needed and in 1896 the service ended. It was expected that it would be restarted and the tracks were left intact. The two steam locomotives of the railway were only scrapped in 1934 and in 1937 the line was finally closed. The tracks were dismantled during the Second World War .
