history

When the route network of the Aroostook Valley Railroad (AVR) was planned, the project also included a branch from Washburn to Wade along the western Aroostook River. With the construction of the AVR main line in 1910, this branch should also be built. Shortly after the main line opened in July of that year, the AVR began operating the first section from Washburn to a gravel pit on Perham Road. The construction to Wade was not carried out, only the name Wade Branch reminded of the original plan. The line branched north of Washburn station from the main line, crossed the Squa Pan-Stockholm route of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and ended shortly thereafter at Perham Road. Like the AVR main line, it was electrified with 1200 volts DC. The line was licensed as a public railway, but only served to remove the gravel quarried from Perham Road.

In 1932 the Canadian Pacific Railway acquired the AVR and with it the Wade Branch . With the purchase of two diesel locomotives in 1945, electrical operation on the line ended, and the catenary systems were dismantled the following year. It is not known exactly when the line was closed. The subsequent main line was shut down in 1982.
