List of Bavarian first names
Many first names have a specific short form in Bavarian . In the rural regions in particular, these short forms are still widely used in the spoken language. In documents, however, the standard German form is usually found.
In some cases, different Bavarian versions were and are still used in parallel due to the local accumulation of certain first names, e.g. B. Sepp / Seppe / Seppl / Sepperl / Bepp for Joseph, Mich / Miche / Michl / Micherl for Michael, whereby the diminutive form for the son or younger is usually used well into old age.
The diminutive is usually followed by an -e (pronounced as [ e ]), -l or -erl, in southeast Upper Bavaria also -ei. Sometimes the -e is also spoken as -i. In the following overview the forms with -e and -i are listed.
