Bajtra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bajtra is a liqueur made from prickly pears in Malta .

Word origin

Bajtra is originally the Maltese name for Opuntia ficus-indica , a Central American cactus species , and its fruits. In Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland, these fruits are known as prickly pears. From this linguistic root , Bajtra also describes the liqueur made from these fruits.

The prickly pear Opuntia ficus-indica ( Maltese bajtar tax-xewk ) was introduced to Malta in the late 15th century. There it grows as a neophyte mostly wild between the dry stone walls and on dirt roads.
