The Balaguša Mosque (Croatian / Bosnian: Džamija Bali-age Ljubunčića , Balaguša džamija or Čaršijska džamija ) is a mosque in the old town of Livno in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the district of the town called Čaršija , from which it derives one of its popular names. It is a national cultural monument.

history

The mosque may have been built between 1530 and 1550 (another date is 1514/1515, making the mosque one of the oldest in Bosnia and Herzegovina). According to tradition, the founder Balagija was a wealthy Aga who is said to have been buried near the mosque. The deed of foundation has not been received.

investment

The building is a dome mosque made of rubble stones with a 14 m high dome on a low octagonal drum and a low, 20.6 m high minaret with a square base and a sixteen-sided shaft. The interior dimensions are 8.47 m by 8.53 m. The interior is richly decorated. To the right of the entrance is a short mahfil . The technically excellent, 4 m high minbar stands on a raised stone pedestal . The 3.50 m high mihrab is also a high-quality workmanship. The mosque has a three-aisled, 3.29 m deep vestibule with three tufa domes resting on spherical triangles and two cylindrical columns made of finely cut stone with bases and capitals between which there are pointed arches. The original Tarih chronogram is located above the entrance . The walls and domes bear remains of the original painting.
