Under ballism ( Greek. Βάλλειν (ballein) "throw, spin") refers to a disorder caused by the injury to the extrapyramidal motor system belonging subthalamic nucleus (or its tracks for pallidum is caused). It is counted among the extrapyramidal hyperkinesias .

Ballism manifests itself through sudden, involuntary and violent slinging movements of the arms and legs or of the shoulder and pelvic girdle. The term "ballism" originally comes from the similarity between these involuntary movements and throwing movements. Often the disease occurs only on one side (then contralateral) as hemiballism . The disease of only one limb is called monoballism .
