Balloon probe (medical technology)
The balloon probe is a type of probe used in medical technology , such as that used in percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy , among other things .
Types of balloon probes
In addition to the probes for administering fluids or food, there are special balloon probes that are used in the case of acute bleeding in the esophagus . The Linton-Nachlas probe with one balloon and the Sengstaken probe with two balloons press on the burst blood vessel; this will reduce or stop the bleeding.
Description of the PEG balloon probe
As with other PEG probes, the basic element of the balloon probe is the flexible plastic tube with a locking head on the outside, a tube clamp to close the tube and an outer retaining plate made of X-ray contrast silicone rubber for fixation.
In contrast to other gastric tubes, the fixation in the tube is not achieved by an inner retaining disc made of x-ray contrast-giving, latex-free silicone rubber, but by a balloon. For maintenance of the fixing balloon, there is a branching piece between the closure head and the hose clamp, from the side access of which a second hose, which runs in the primary hose, leads to the balloon.
Advantages of the balloon probe
The balloon probe allows a change without renewed endoscopic intervention, as may be necessary, for example, if the tube is blocked or damaged.
disadvantage
The holding balloon must be serviced regularly by checking the filling level of the balloon.
investment
The balloon probe can be used when the probe is first inserted, but it can also replace a PEG at a later date, as recommended by the manufacturer Fresenius Kabi .
