Ballybunion

Ballybunion or Ballybunnion ( Irish : Baile an Bhuinneánaigh ) is a resort on the coast of County Kerry in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland . The place with 1365 inhabitants (as of 2006) is 15 kilometers from the city of Listowel . Sights in the area include a castle, of which only a wall remains , and the hiking trails along the sometimes very steep cliffs, caves formed by the tides , a prehistoric rubbish heap , a dolphin population and highly acclaimed surfing waves.

Ballybunion is important in Irish railway history because it was here in 1888 that the Listowel Ballybunion Railway, the world's first commercially used monorail, opened.

There are two golf courses in Ballybunion . In 2002, the Ballybunion Golf Club was ranked 11th on the list of the best by Golf Magazine .

The place is also known for its kelp -Badeanstalt and boiled beach snails , which are sold like popcorn in paper bags.
