Ballycastle Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ballycastle Castle ( Irish Caisléan Bhaile an Chaistil ) was a castle in Ballycastle , Northern Ireland . It already existed during the lifetime of Eoin Mór Tánaiste Mac Domhnaill († around 1427). In 1564 Somhairle Buidhe Mac Domhnaill expanded the building. A year later, Seán Donnaíleach Ó Néill took possession of the castle. In the course of the 17th century, Randal MacDonnell, 1st Earl of Antrim had the castle demolished and a new one built in the same place. During the Irish Confederation Wars , the building was captured by Scottish troops in 1642 and later occupied by Oliver Cromwell's troops. In 1665 it was returned to Alexander MacDonnell, 3rd Earl of Antrim . Over the years it deteriorated more and more, so that Charles Kirkpatrick, from Whitehall, had it completely demolished in 1856.
