The Baltic Sea Experiment , or BALTEX for short , is a program run by the countries bordering the Baltic Sea to research the water cycle in the catchment area of the Baltic Sea .

For this purpose, the meteorological (fresh water input through rain and fresh water loss through evaporation), hydrological (fresh water input through rivers) and oceanographic (water exchange with the world's oceans ) water balance of the Baltic Sea is examined.

The measurements serve the goal of developing models that allow a more reliable weather forecast and the estimation of probable future climatic conditions .
