The Baluse , also Baloese , is a shield from Indonesia .
description
The baluse is made of wood. It is made leaf-shaped. Its lower end ends in a massive, wooden, spiky extension that is blunt or slightly pointed. The front of the shield has groove-like, linear depressions at regular intervals and ends at the top to a blunt, flat end. A semi-circular rib runs over almost the entire length of the shield in the center line, which is provided with a round, pot-like structure in the middle of the shield. A wooden handle is carved out on the inside, as well as a bulge that is used to hold the hand.

The baluse is made from a piece of wood and is often provided with horizontal rattan cords , which serve to prevent the wood from splintering lengthways if the shield is hit with a sword . Decorative carvings or paintings are often attached to the outside. The baluse is used as a protective weapon by ethnic groups on the Nias Island.
