The Banco Internacional ( Baninter for short ) is the sixth largest bank in Ecuador and is based in the capital Quito . The bank was founded in 1973 with the significant participation of the Spanish Banco Ibérico (merged in 1977 with Banco Central Hispano , which has been part of Banco Santander since 1999 ). It now has 93 branches and 420 ATMs across Ecuador. Together with Interfondos and Seguros Cervantes (insurance), it forms the financial group Grupo Financiero Banco Internacional .

At the end of the 19th century there was already a bank called Banco Internacional . This was u. a. active as a private central bank in Guayaquil and emerged in 1887 from the Banco Anglo-Ecuatoriano and was reorganized in 1894 as Banco Comercial y Agrícola . Under this name it became the most important bank in the country and had a great influence on the politics of the Liberal Party in particular until around 1925. Except for the name, this former bank has nothing in common with the one described here.
