The Bank of Sierra Leone is the central bank of Sierra Leone , headquartered in Freetown .
history
When Sierra Leone became independent in 1961, the monetary and financial system was headed by the West African Monetary Council. As in all independent states, there was also an effort in Sierra Leone to implement its own central bank and currency. As a result, it was decided on March 27, 1963 to found the Bank of Sierra Leone, which then began its work on August 4, 1964.
tasks
With the Central Bank Act passed in 2000, the Bank of Sierra Leone takes on numerous traditional central bank functions. She is also responsible for banking affairs in rural areas and the issuing of diamond certificates.
future
Together with Gambia , Ghana , Guinea and Nigeria , Sierra Leone has passed the "West African Monetary Zone Act". This included the establishment of the West African Financial Institute, to which all central banks of the member countries belong. The aim is to create the West African Central Bank (similar to the model of the European Central Bank ) with the aim of introducing a single currency, the Eco , for West Africa. For some years now, the WAUA (West African Units Accounts) has existed as a common currency for electronic banking transactions and travelers' checks (see ECU ).
