The Banker Horse (also Banker Pony or Shakleford Pony ) is a breed of feral domestic horse that is native to the Outer Banks Island range off the coast of North Carolina . It is a small, resilient horse with a good-natured character. It comes from domesticated Iberian horses, and may have been brought in the 16th century to the American continent, the first representatives of the breed may overgrown after a shipwreck or from a research expedition led by Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón and Sir Richard Grenville on the Islands were left behind. Banker Horse populations are found on Ocracoke Island, Shackleford Banks, Currituck Banks, and the Rachel Carson Reservation.
