The cartographer Diego Ribero named the Atlantic coast of North America after Ayllon in 1529: Tierra de Ayllón

Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón (* around 1478 in Toledo , † October 18, 1526 in Virginia ) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador .

In 1504 he went to Hispaniola and worked there as a judge. In 1520 he mediated between rivals Hernán Cortés and Diego Velázquez . At the same time he operated the slave trade with Indians.

In 1526 Ayllón sailed with a total of six ships and 500 colonists to the coast of what is now South Carolina , where he founded San Miguel de Gualdape , the first European settlement in what is now the United States. On board were also African slaves, some of whom withdrew from the settlement during an uprising and found shelter with the Indians.

Due to the difficult circumstances (hunger, illness and quarrels with the Indians) most of the colonists died. Ayllón himself died of a fever. After only three months, at the beginning of 1527, the settlement was abandoned again. The 150 survivors returned to Hispaniola.
