Banque d'Athènes

The Banque d'Athénes was a commercial bank founded in 1893 with headquarters in Athens, the second largest bank in Greece was taken over by the National Bank of Greece until 1962 .

The bank was founded in 1893 and started operations a year later. Within a few years, a network of branches was set up, which was supplemented by branches in centers of the Greek diaspora. In 1906, the majority in the Credit Bank of Professionals (Τράπεζα Επαγγελματικής Πίστεως), founded in 1873, was taken over.

During the occupation the bank was placed under the administration of the Dresdner Bank .

In 1953 the branches in Egypt were merged with those of the National Bank of Greece and run as the National Bank of Greece and Athens , in 1960 all foreign banks in Egypt were nationalized. Until 1962 the bank was taken over by the National Bank of Greece , the former head office is still used by the NBG today, the branch in Thessaloniki now houses the Jewish Museum .

Re-establishment as a spin-off from the NBG Group

In the course of the liberalization of the Greek banking market, NBG sold its subsidiary Credit Bank of Professionals (Τράπεζα Επαγγελματικής Πίστεως) and renamed it Bank of Athens . This bank was later taken over and dissolved by Eurobank Ergasias .
