Banteay Choeu
Coordinates: 13 ° 26 ' N , 103 ° 45' E
Banteay Choeu ( Khmer បន្ទាយ ឈើ , wooden tower) was an urban settlement area of the former Khmer empire in Cambodia . The earliest city founding in the area of Angkor was possibly here in the 8th century .
The square, enclosed by a wall, was at the western end of the later built West Baray (artificially created water basin). A faint line can be seen from the air showing the location of the old enclosure. The location of two brick-built temple complexes on the site is known and only a few remains have been preserved: The ruins of Prasat Ak Yum are located on the southern slope of the water basin built at the beginning of the 11th century, in which the temple partially disappeared during the flooding. The Prei Kmeng was on the western edge of Banteay Chou outside.
It is known that Jayavarman II built here at the end of the 8th and beginning of the 9th centuries, and Banteau Choeu may have been one of his centers.
