Banteay Kdei is a monastery complex in Angkor built from the middle of the 12th to the beginning of the 13th century under King Jayavarman VII (1181-1220) . The building is similar to Ta Prohm , but less ornate and smaller. Because of the poor construction and the brittle sandstone, it is in poor condition today.

King Jayavarman VII had it built for his teacher as the first of the three monastery complexes (before Ta Prohm and Neak Pean ) in Angkor.
