Banteay Prei Nokor is a large city in the east of Cambodia that dates back to before the formation of the Angkor Empire , around the end of the 8th century . The city is significant because it is considered the capital of King Jayavarman II (about 770-834) before he founded Angkor after his odyssey in northwestern Southeast Asia.

Banteay Prei Nokor is located on the edge of the Mekong town of Kampong Cham . The city is enclosed on an area of 2.5  km² by an earthen wall and an external moat.

Russian archaeologist Victor Goloubev took some aerial photographs of the area in 1936 , clearly showing the temple, moat, and shore. Goloubev also noticed five other reservoirs that are on an axis and are all outside the trench. In the center are the Preah Theat Thom and Preah Theat Toch shrines.
