biography

Born in 1972 in Bern, Switzerland, Bader initially trained as a primary school teacher, completed a teaching degree for artistic design and then studied illustration and book design at the School of Applied Arts in Prague. After completing her master's degree in art history at Oxford University , she did her doctorate there on the art-historical subject “Modernism and the Order of Things: A Museography of Books by Artists”.

Bader had taught for several years at home and abroad as well as teaching and research engagements at art colleges, universities and colleges of education. She established the Art Education Institute at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and was professor at the Bern University of the Arts (HKB) from 2006 to 2013 . There she was responsible for the training of art teachers at grammar schools as well as the research field of education.

Since December 1, 2013 Bader has been teaching as a professor for art didactics and educational sciences in the courses of art, artistic teaching and art history restoration at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. Since her call to the academy, Barbara Bader has built up and profiled the newly created chair for didactics in art and educational sciences in teaching and research. This becomes just as clear in the anchoring of the chair within the academy and the university location Stuttgart as in the networking of the artistic teaching position with the school environment and the professional associations. Bader was involved in university self-administration until she took office as rector on April 4, 2017, as a member of the university council and the study commission for art / artistic teaching as well as chair of the doctoral committee.
