history

Presumably the lands belonged to the Norman Machan family at first . A relative of the Duke of Hamilton married Anne Machan in 1507 and thus came into possession of the Barncluith estates. In the same century, a tower house was built on the site , which has been preserved to this day. The grandson John Hamilton returned to Barncluith in 1583. He had the Tower House restored and started the gardens.

The nucleus of Barncluith House is likely to have originated in the 1730s. The Scottish architect William Adam was probably involved. A Victorian redesign of Barncluith House was carried out in the following century. Over the centuries, Barncluith House was frequently leased out and had multiple owners.

After Hamilton Palace was demolished in 1927, preserved ornaments from the palace were integrated into the gardens.
